Chapelle du Saint-Esprit

Place Du Four Mollet
56400 Auray
The Duke of Brittany, Jean II, crowned in Rennes in 1286, appreciated Auray. He is said to have founded a chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. It was located to the south-east of the present building. It still existed in the 18th century and housed a recumbent statue of Christ. Architects distinguish two phases of construction: in the 13th century, the eastern part (the choir); in the 14th century, the western part (the nave). The chapel was last used for mass in 1790, before being used as a military barracks. In 1831, the chapel was acquired by the Ministry of War, which undertook work to house the soldiers. The chapel was completely disfigured. Only after restoration in 1994 was it restored to its original appearance.the chapelle du Saint-Esprit hosts an annual exhibition of contemporary art during the summer season.
