Aimé Césaire" conference
With the publication of "Cahier d'un retour au pays natal" in 1939, Aimé Césaire shows in this long prose poem that poetic language is as much a spiritual adventure as an experience of freedom.
In a colonial society dominated by whites and mulattos, Césaire consents to being black, asserts his "négrité" (blackness), and addresses the Antilles, whose forebears were African slaves, urging them to combat this heritage of guilt and servitude.
For Césaire, "négritude" encompasses the historical and political awareness of the humiliated "nègre", but it is also a poetic revolt that, in the tradition of Rimbaud and the Surrealists, gives language a liberating and enchanting power" Olivier Macaux
