La Chartreuse
La Chartreuse was built following the Battle of Auray, which pitted Jean de Montfort against his cousin and rival Charles de Blois for the Duchy of Brittany. The confrontation cost Charles de Blois his life and put an end to the War of the Breton Succession. In 1382, Jean IV de Montfort, now Duke of Brittany, had the collegiate church of Saint-Michel du Champ built in memory of the fallen. In 1482, the Carthusian monks settled here, but were expelled in 1791. The bones of the Chouans and émigrés shot by General Hoche's troops in 1795 are preserved in the Chartreuse Mausoleum. At the time, they were summarily buried in the "martyrs' field", 500 m from La Chartreuse in the direction of Sainte-Anne d'Auray.
